Title: | Rosa Gallica Officinalis (Apothecary's Rose) |
Size: | 14 1/2" W x 17 1/2" H |
Medium: | watercolor |
Alongside a dirt road near our log cabin rental in New Hampshire grows a 40-foot thicket of the most beautiful rose you have ever seen. Obviously an escaped plant from a farmhouse many years ago, this rose now fills the early summer air with its powerful perfume.
Note the painting's exciting "Z" composition created by the stem, along which rest the rose hip, the full-blown blossom, and the dramatic calyx.
Painting en plaine air can be a risky endeavor, as evidenced by the mild case of poison ivy caught while making this painting.
